Donor Dollars at Work
Some of the important ways your generous contributions have been used to enhance the lives of children and their families touched by cancer are as follows:
Life-Saving Research
One Mission is helping to fund life-saving research at Children’s Hospital Boston led by Pediatric Oncologist, Dr. Scott Armstrong. Dr. Armstrong is a leader in leukemia research and his landmark findings are helping to discover new and better treatments for children with cancer and blood diseases.
Read about a new study led by Dr. Scott Armstrong’s research team which reveals a possible new strategy in eradicating chemo-resistant leukemia stem cells.
B.E.A.D.S. Program (Beading Each A Different Story)
One Mission is a sponsor of the B.E.A.D.S. program at Children’s Hospital Boston. As part of the B.E.A.D.S. program, oncology patients receive a specific bead to represent an important procedure or event in their cancer treatment. The children string their beads together to give them a sense of achievement and help them to cope with the numerous procedures and treatments they must endure as they fight to get better.
Mini-Refrigerators
Parents of pediatric cancer patients will spend months living at the hospital as their children undergo treatment. Parents will be forced to spend an extraordinary amount of money on parking, transportation, and basic necessities such as food. These lengthy hospital stays create stress and financial hardship for many families. To make living at the hospital more comfortable, convenient and cost effective for families; One Mission has donated a mini-refrigerator to each patient who is living on the Pediatric Oncology Floor at Children’s Hospital Boston.
Books, Toys & Games
In an effort to bring some much needed joy and happiness to patients during their treatment and hospitalization, One Mission has donated books, toys, and games for the children to enjoy while they are living at the hospital.
Family Resource Programs
One Mission supports Family Resource Programs at Children’s Hospital Boston. Their mission is to not only provide the best medical care for children with cancer and blood diseases, but also the highest level of support for their families. These programs offer educational resources, financial assistance, therapeutic and diversion activities, entertainment, meals and holiday celebrations – all to meet the special needs of patients and families during their long hospital stay.

The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is one of the world’s premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Once discharged from the hospital, many pediatric cancer patients will continue their treatment and follow-up care at the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Pediatric cancer patients whose immune systems have been compromised due to a Stem Cell Transplant, or patients who may pose a health risk to other patients, are placed on contact restriction. This means they must be put into an isolation room and separated from the rest of the patient population during their visits to the clinic. Based on the requirements of their treatments, these patients can spend between 2-6 hours a day in an isolation room during their visit.
One Mission has funded the annual salary of a Stem Cell Transplant Activities Specialist. This person is responsible for coordinating age-appropriate activities and therapeutic programs that provide joy and entertainment to patients who require an isolation room during their visit. The Activities Specialist also acts as an information resource for patients and their families, participates with them in supportive programs and therapies, and helps ease their transition from in-patient hospital care to the outpatient clinic.
Help us to continue to support programs and services for pediatric cancer patients at the Jimmy Fund Clinic by joining the One Mission team for the 2010 Boston Marthon/Jimmy Fund Walk.
